Ski Land and On-Property Facilities
Buying land near skiing, and what to check when a property has its own ski trails, a private slope or a rope tow.
Some buyers want land close to a ski area to build on later. Others are drawn to rural properties with their own cross-country trails or even a small private slope. Both raise questions that a standard home purchase does not: year-round road access, utilities, septic feasibility, snow load requirements, and in the case of an existing tow or slope, liability, insurance and permits.
What can be built, and how, is decided by local zoning, building and health officials, along with any covenants on the land. We explain the questions and the offices that answer them. We do not assess whether any specific parcel is buildable or whether an on-property ski facility is legal or insurable.
