Where to Ski by State and Region

How to find downhill areas, local hills and cross-country trails in a state or region, and how to check what each place actually offers.

Most people know the handful of big resorts in their region. Fewer know about the community hill with a rope tow twenty minutes away, the Nordic center run by a nonprofit club, or the groomed trails in a county park. These guides explain how to find all of them, starting with the operator, the land manager and the state ski association rather than a ranked list.

Skiing changes a lot from one state to the next: season length, terrain, how areas are owned and who maintains the trails. We describe how to research a region and which official sources to check, and we say when a guide is based on a specific source and when it was last checked.
